MPSi (membrane protein structure initiative) is a collaboration between 8 leading UK academic laboratories that will co-ordinate skills, information, techniques and resources in a project to develop high throughput methods for the expression, purification, crystallisation and structure determination of integral membrane proteins.
Our strategy is to address a target list of membrane proteins with an initial emphasis on ion channels and transporters. Tasks that require special expertise will be concentrated initially at those centres with most experience in that area; other tasks will be distributed dynamically to make best use of the skills resources and facilities available throughout the consortium. Exchanges of research personnel between centres will provide training in all aspects of membrane protein structure biology within the consortium and increase the level of expertise in all the laboratories.
