Administartors can define who can view and edit the items of laboratory information in the PiMS database.
You should have the access rights required for your normal work.

  • Notes to administrators:

  • Create new user

adds a record to PIMS's database describing the user. In later versions of PIMS you will also be able you to specify the password.
At present you must add the username and password to the file: web-users.xml
    in: /Apache Software Foundation/Tomcat 5.5/conf.
  • Create new project

allows you have the option to create a new Data owner, to own the project information, and a new User group, representing the members of the project.

For help using PiMS Access Rights management, see Access Rights help.

Policies

Each user group has create and update access to the data owned by a single owner. It can have read access to several owners.

You can update the attribute information in a record in PIMS (e.g. recorded measurements) as long as you are in a user group which has update permission for it. Some of the information in PIMS is not recorded as attribute values, but is in the form of an association between two records, e.g. the association between a target and a database reference describing it. There is a more technical access policy for updating these associations.

The admininstrator will need to understand this rule, if they decide to create custom access rules. If you use the access rights according to projects you will not have to read this.

The rule is that to create an association betwen two records, a user must be in a group that has update access to the principal record in the association, and read access to the other record. The reason for this rule is that it ensures that anyone else with the right to modify the association will be entitled to view all the associates.
